Miller Drives to Late Model Victory at MIS

Wilberg, Luck, Ace, and McNamara Winners Too.

By John Wells (VL Photos follow race recap)

Oregon, WI (Friday, July 30, 2010)- Defending champion Jeremy Miller returned to victory lane tonight by winning the 40 lap feature for the Rockweiler Insulation Late Models. Bobby Wilberg won again in the Ho Chunk Gaming Area Sportsman with Brad Luck in the Club LaMark Hobby Stocks, Chester Ace in the Roto Rooter Bandits, and Max McNamara in the Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends also earning checkered flags.

Following a pair of rain delays during practice and qualifying, it was determined at the drivers’ meeting to run only features since the chance of light precipitation remained in the forecast.

Miller Masters the Late Models

For the third time in 2010, Jeremy Miller took home the checkered flag after winning the 40 lap feature for the Rockweiler Insulation Late Models.

Rookie Ty Majeski and Kevin Knuese brought the field of twenty cars to the green flag. Majeski would grab the early lead followed by Knuese and Shane Morrissey. The caution flag came out on lap 4 when Morrissey and Knuese got together on the front stretch sending both cars into the wall in turn one. Both drivers were okay, but their cars suffered heavy damage.

The double file restart would find Majeski on the inside and Ryan Goldade on the outside. Goldade would take over the lead on lap 5 as Majeski was losing ground quickly. Bobby Wilberg was up to second followed by Zack Riddle, Chad Stevens, and Nathan Oppliger.

The yellow flag came out on lap 13 for a spin in turn turn two. Goldade would restart on the inside with Wilberg on the outside. It would be a great start for Goldade who built up a three car length advantage. But Wilberg was not about to be outdone as he battled back and took over the lead on lap 17 while coming out of turn two as Goldade fell off the pace.

Wilberg would continue to lead despite a pair of cautions on laps 18 and 19. Stevens would move into second on lap 19 followed by Miller, Goldade, and Riddle. On lap 22 Miller was up to second and was beginning to hunt down Wilberg who had built up a multi-car length advantage.

Lap by lap Miller was closing the gap. Finally on lap 31 he made his move to the low side of Wilberg coming out of turn two to take over the point. Meanwhile, a great battle was taking place for third between Goldade and Scott Broughton. The two would eventually get together on lap 36 bringing out the caution and sending both cars to the rear of the field.

The restart would find a couple of old foes on the front row. Miller would set up on the inside with Wilberg on the outside. OnceÉtwiceÉthree timesÉand finally, on the fourth try the race went green again as flagman Arnie Thompson didn’t like what he saw.

When the green flag finally stayed out, Miller would continue to lead before the caution came out again on lap 39 for a spin.

The final double file restart would again favor Miller who took his car to victory lane. Riddle would move up to finish second followed by Stevens, Baumeister Jr., and Wilberg.

“This is pretty awesome,” said Miller. “Last time we were here we blew the motor up so this is great. Our guys worked really hard that night to get the car fixed for the next night.”

When asked about his battle with Wilberg, Miller noted, “He doesn’t like to lose, I don’t like to lose either. We are good buddies and love racing against each other.”

Riddle set fast time in qualifying with a lap of 18.807 (95.709 mph).

Victory Lane Becomes Wilberg’s Second Home

Victory lane has become like a second home for Bobby Wilberg this year as he won for the sixth time (eight counting the two ASA Midwest Sportsman races) as he won the Ho Chuck Gaming Area Sportsman 15 lap feature.

Greg Baxter and Robert Hansberry made up the front row with Hansberry getting out to the early lead and looking strong. Stephen Scheel was up to second with Wilberg in third after the first lap.

Hansberry continued his leading ways and it appeared that if the race stayed caution-free he may just pick up his first career feature win. Behind the leader, Scheel and Wilberg were racing it out for second with Wilberg finally gaining the advantage on lap 8.

The caution flag came out on lap 10 for a spin setting up the double file restart and taking away Hansberry’s lead. Hansberry would line up on the inside with Wilberg outside when the field came to the green again. Wilberg would get a great start and sprint to the lead and never look back the rest of the way.

“Robert was getting a little loose coming out of the corners before the caution flag came out. I think I could’ve gotten by him even if the caution didn’t come out.,” said Wilberg.

Wilberg set fast time with a circuit of 20.467 (87.946 mph).

Ace Takes the Checkered Flag in the Bandits

Chester Ace returned to victory lane for the sixth time in 2010 after topping the sixteen car Roto Rooter Bandit field in their 20 lap feature.

Darrell Klug and Joe Solem paced the field to the green flag. Klug would lead the first lap before Jason Coker took the lead away on lap 2. Meanwhile, the action behind the leaders was wild right from the start as Ace was up to third by lap 3 with Bobby Selsing Jr. and Kyle Padfield on his tail.

On lap 4, Ace, running the outside line, would fly by Coker for the lead. On the following lap, Selsing Jr. was up to second followed by Padfield, Coker, and Pat Richgels.

The caution flag came out on lap 7 for debris with Ace still setting the pace. Lee Haag would break into the top five on lap 8 as the field tried to chase the leader.

The top five would remain the same until the second caution flag would wave on lap 15 for a spin in turn one.

Ace would continue to lead the rest of the way with the best battle on the track being between Haag and Padfield. Haag would power by Padfield on lap 18, but none of these Bandits would quite have enough for Ace who took the checkered flag by 2.284 seconds over Selsing Jr. Haag, Padfield, and Richgels would round out the top five.

“I was able to get outside and avoid some of the early problems out front. We are glad to get back here in victory lane,” said Ace from Indian Motorcyles of Chicago Victory Lane.

Luck Gets It Done in Hobby Stocks

The car has been to victory lane this season, but for Brad Luck it was his first trip as he held off the field to win the 12 lap feature for the Club LaMark Hobby Stocks.

Mike Storkson and Terry Ciano Jr. led the field to the green flag with Ciano Jr. taking the point. But quickly up to join him was Luck who pulled alongside before the caution flag came out on the second lap when Storkson had a tire go down which forced Chad Knaus into the outside wall. Knaus was alright, but he was done for the night.

Luck and Ciano Jr. continued to fight it out side by side for the next five laps as the crowd waited for something to give. While coming down the backstretch on lap 7, Ciano Jr. spun bringing out the caution. This moved Don Fassett up to the outside of Luck on the restart.

Luck would continue to lead, but Fassett wasn’t about to give up the win. On lap 10 he looked to the outside of the leader but drifted up the track giving Luck a multi-car advantage. Fassett would now have his work cut out for him with Ciano Jr. who would eventually take over the second position. But this night belonged to Luck who took home the win with a 1.449 second advantage over Ciano Jr.

“A very close race. We both tried to hold our lines and it was another great race. It’s always tight racing in the hobby stocks,” said Luck.

Fassett set fast time with a lap of 21.721 (82.869 mph).

McNamara Back in Victory Lane

Two-time champion Max McNamara won for the fourth time in 2010 and increased his lead in the points standings by topping the twelve car field in the 20 lap feature for the Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends.

Branden Beverley took the early lead from the pole position and was the leader for the first four laps. Tommy Jones took over the top spot on lap 5 when he passed Beverley on the inside while coming out of turn one.

On lap 8 the caution flag would wave for a spin. Jones continued to lead the race with McNamara up to challenge and closing quickly. On lap 13 and with lapped traffic just ahead, McNamara made his move and pulled to the outside of Jones coming out of turn four and took the lead. It would be a lead he would never relinquish.

With McNamara out front by 2.5 seconds, the battle behind him was heating up between Jones, Andy Jones, and Kyle Justis. Andy Jones would eventually take the second place position with Justis edging Tommy Jones for third.

Earlier in the night things didn’t look good for McNamara. “We were having motor problems and probably wouldn’t have been able to run the heat race. But things worked out and the car was fast.”
