Scott Broughton Wins Bob Schmelzer 40 Wilberg, Fassett, Haag, and Jones Also Winners. By John Wells [VL Photos Follow Race Recap] Oregon, WI (Friday, July 16, 2010)- It was a perfect summer night for racing at Madison International Speedway tonight and the fans witnessed some of the most exciting on track action of the season as part of Ho Chunk Gaming Night. Five drivers would go home with wins as Scott Broughton (Late Models), Bobby Wilberg (Area Sportsman), Don Fassett (Hobby Stocks), Lee Haag (Bandits) and Andy Jones (Legends) picked up wins. Broughton Races to Victory Lane Scott Broughton picked up his second feature win of the season in the Rockweiler Insulation Late Models as he topped the eighteen car field in the Bob Schmelzer 40, an event named in honor of the long-time employee who was celebrating his 82nd birthday this week. An all-Oregon front row of Nathan Oppliger and Brady Liddle led the field to the green flag. Liddle, driving his backup car after his primary car was damaged last week, took the lead from the start followed by Oppliger, John Baumeister Jr., Ty Majeski and Broughton. On lap 8 Baumeister Jr. would work his way to the inside of Oppliger to take over the second position with Broughton and Jeremy Miller also moving into the top five. Broughton would overtake Baumeister Jr. for second on lap 11 and was clearly the quickest car on the track. Liddle would hold on to the lead until lap 13 when Broughton pulled to the inside coming down the front shoot and pulled away from Liddle coming out of turn two to take the lead. Broughton quickly built up his advantage and in no time was up to a six car length advantage over his nearest competitors. The race behind Broughton was a good one with Baumeister Jr. and Liddle. But it was smooth sailing for Broughton who was up to a twelve car length lead by lap 23 when he caught the tail end of the field. Fortunately for Broughton he had that lead as a two wide battle was taking place at the back of the pack between Russ Grossen and Mackenzie Piller. Broughton was able to work his way past the pair on lap 27 prior to the races first caution flag coming out on lap 28 when point leader Jeremy Millers machine went up in smoke and sailed up into the wall in turn one. The double file restart found Broughton on the inside and Liddle on the outside followed by Baumeister Jr. and Bobby Wilberg. By lap 30 Broughtons lead was back up to six car lengths with Baumeister Jr. and Liddle fighting it out side by side for second followed by Zack Riddle and Ryan Goldade. Broughton continued his strong run out front building the lead to eight car lengths before the caution came out on lap 37 for a spin involving Brady Liddle. Broughton would again gain the inside position on the restart and quickly regained his lead with Goldade jumping up to second place. But the night belonged to Broughton who cruised to victory lane followed by Goldade, Wilberg, Chad Stevens, and Baumeister Jr. We were definitely fast tonight. We put a lot of work into the car this week and it was perfect tonight, said Broughton from victory lane in his post race interview with Eric Huenefeld. Wilberg was the fast qualifier with a lap of 18.949 (94.992 mph). Heat wins went to Vern Fagerberg Jr., Jeremy Miller, and Scott Broughton. Miller still leads the point race with 544 followed by Wilberg at 538 and Broughton with 516. Late Models 7/16/2010 40 Lap Feature:1. Scott Broughton (Stoughton, WI), 2. Wilberg Sweeps His Way to Victory Lane It was another clean sweep for Bobby Wilberg after he won the 15 lap feature for the Ho Chunk Gaming Area Sportsman. Russ Nicholson and Don Wickstrum led the field of eight cars to the green flag with Nicholson jumping out to the early lead. Nicholson would gain the lead and maintain it for the first four laps before Stephen Scheel dropped to the low side of the track coming out of turn four to take the lead. But his lead would be short-lived as Wilberg would power his way by Scheel on the inside coming out of turn two. The caution flag would come out one lap later for a spin. When the race went green again Wilberg would be able to hold off Scheel for the lead opening it up to two car lengths before the races second caution came out on lap 13 for a spin in turn four. Wilberg would continue his lead after the restart and hold off Scheel for the trip to Indian Motorcycles of Chicago Victory Lane. Robert Hansberry, Mike Taylor, and Don Wickstrum rounded out the top five. I got a good run on the outside. The guys up front were fighting it out on the inside so I decided to go to the outside and it worked out well for me, commented Wilberg. Setting fast time was Wilberg with a circuit of 20.494 (87.831 mph). Wilberg also captured the heat race earlier in the evening. Wilberg has a solid lead in the points chase with 692 followed by Scheel at 616 and Taylor with 553. Area Sportsman 7/16/2010 15 Lap Feature:1. Bobby Wilberg (Beloit, WI), 2. Fassett Leads the Way in Hobby Stocks There might have been only six cars in the Club LaMark Hobby Stocks, but the top four put on one of the best races of the year on Wisconsins Fastest Half-Mile with Don Fassett holding off the field for the win in the 12 lap feature. Fassett and Terry Ciano Jr. started in the front row and were quickly joined by Brad Luck and Chad Knaus out front. At times it appeared that the cars were part of a chain race with inches separating the line of four. On lap 10 Knaus tried to work his way to the outside but was unable to get by Fassett and Ciano Jr. He gave it one more try on lap 11 but the pass just wouldnt happen as Fassett took home the checkered flag by a 0.060 second margin over Knaus. Ciano Jr. would finish third followed by Luck and Rodger Stephenson. This was a very rewarding win, said Fassett. Terry was getting into the corner pretty fast and we were able to hang on. After problems in the heat race that resulted in a DNF, Fassett was very happy with what transpired prior to the feature. I cut a tire going into turn one which started all that stuff. Knaus was fastest in qualifying with a lap of 21.667 (83.076 mph) and also earned the heat win. The team of Todd Ambrose and Brad Luck lead the way in the points with 688 followed by Fassett and Knaus with 682 and 656 respectively. Hobby Stocks 7/16/2010 Feature:1. Lee Haags Excellent Adventure Lee Haag had quite an adventure on his way to earning his first feature win of the season by topping the fifteen car field in the 20 lap feature for the Roto Rooter Bandits. Darrell Klug and Joe Solem paced the field of fifteen cars to the green flag and the excitement began. Two, three and four wide action on the first circuit resulted in Haag getting out to the lead followed by Klug and Solem. Haag quickly put some distance between himself and the field before the caution flag came out on lap 3 for a spin in turn four. Haag would continue his lead with Jon Coker up to second followed by Jason Coker, Chester Ace and Kyle Padfield. Haag would continue his leading ways with Chester Ace in pursuit and up to second on lap 10. Haag appeared to be unstoppable at this point except for one thing- lapped traffic. On lap 16 the tail of the field was three wide as Haag somehow found room to the outside in turn one as Ace went to the low side. With one lap to go and Ace closing quickly, Haag maneuvered his way between two lapped cars on the backstretch and lead the rest of the way for the win. Ace would finish second followed by Padfield, Jon and Jason Coker. I felt that I had a good starting position and I learned from my brother in law (Chester Ace) that with a little patience you can run the high line, said Haag. Cars got together and gave me just enough room so I split all of them for the last lap. Chester was in my mirror the last ten laps. He also added, I want to thank my number one fans Angela, Emma, and Lucas for always being there for me. Ace set fast time with a lap of 15.478 (58.147 mph). Jason Coker was the winner of the first heat while Lee Haag was triumphant in the second eight lap heat. Ace continues to hold a 627-594 lead in the points race over Padfield with Haag in third at 512. Bandits 7/16/2010 Feature:1. Lee Haag (Belleville, WI), 2. Chester Ace (Oregon, WI), 3. Andy Jones Edges Max McNamara for Legends Win Andy Jones won his second feature of the 2010 season by edging Max McNamara in the 20 lap main event for the Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends. Kevin Griffin and Steve Narr had the honors of leading the thirteen car field to the green flag with Griffin getting the best of Narr and taking the lead. Griffin would maintain his lead for the first four laps before a spin on lap 5 brought out the first caution. It didnt take long for the second caution flag to wave as the cars of Dave Terrafino and Brandon Heisler got together on the restart. Terrafino would continue; Heisler would not. Griffin would bring the field back to green, but McNamara and Jones both were able to power by him on the backstretch to take the top two positions. McNamara would take over the lead on lap 7 when he slid by Jones on the inside coming out of turn four. The caution flag would come out one more time on lap 12 for a spin thus setting up the legendary finish. Jones would work his way to the inside of McNamara on lap 13 and the two would race side by side the rest of the way trading off the lead by inches on each lap. Finally when it was all said and done it would be Jones edging McNamara by 0.105 seconds at the stripe for the win. Veteran Tim Narr would finish third followed by Griffin and Justis, who had worked his all the way back to fifth after going to the back of the field earlier in the race. From victory lane Jones said, It was an interesting race. I was hoping Max would give me some room and he did. I thought it would be a good race between us. Interestingly enough both Jones and McNamara work on the cars together during the week. McNamara was the fastest in qualifying with a lap of 14.241 (63.198 mph). Heat race wins went to Dave Wastak and Kyle Justis. McNamara leads the points with 627 followed by Andy Jones at 588 and Tommy Jones with 525. Legends 7/16/2010 Feature:1. Andy Jones (Gurnee, IL), 2.
