Bobby Wilberg Wins Late Model Feature on Final Lap

Scheel, Fassett, Ace, and Jones Also Victorious

By John Wells and Amanda Voss [VL Photos follow race report]

Oregon, WI (Friday, June 4, 2010)- Bobby Wilberg was definitely in the right place at the right time as the misfortunes of others became money in the bank for him as he won the 40 lap feature for the Rockweiler Insulation Late Models at Madison International Speedway. Stephen Scheel won his first-ever feature in the Ho Chunk Gaming Area Sportsman while Don Fassett (Club LaMark Hobby Stocks, Chester Ace (Roto Rooter Bandits), and Andy Jones (Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends) also found their respective ways to victory lane.

Wilberg Finds a New Way to Victory Lane

It appeared like Bobby Wilberg would have to settle for a third place finish in the 40 lap feature for the Rockweiler Insulation Late Models. And if the race would have only been 39 laps that’s exactly how it would have played out. However, a last lap incident involving John Baumeister Jr. and Jeremy Miller that saw the leaders get together opened up the door for the multi-time track champion to pick up his first win of the 2010 race season.

“Not here,” was Bobby Wilberg’s response to a question in a post race interview when asked if he had ever won a race at MIS the way he did tonight. And once again there was no shortage of excitement in the Late Model feature.

It all started with Nathan Oppliger and Wilberg leading the field to the green flag. Oppliger would lead the first four laps before giving up the lead to Baumeister Jr. Wilberg would move past Oppliger one lap later to take over the second position before relinquishing it to Miller one lap later.

Despite a series of cautions for a variety of incidents, Baumeister Jr. would have the same successful result after each restart. Taking advantage of the inside groove, Baumeister Jr. would build an advantage over Miller. But as the race moved along Miller was slowly cutting into his lead.

The crowd waited in eager anticipation for when Miller would make his move to take the lead. On lap 38 it appeared that he may have found some room but it wouldn’t be enough. The same results would occur on lap 39 making it all come down to the final lap. With Wilberg, Scott Broughton, and Chad Wood running third through fifth and eagerly watching what was unfolding in front of them, Miller went for it all coming down the backstretch on the final lap. Dropping down to the low side of the track, the defending track champion was ready to make his move coming into turn three.

As he positioned himself for the pass, Miller looked to the inside of Baumeister Jr. but unfortunately there was not enough room and the two made contact coming out of turn three sending Baumeister Jr. up the track and Miller off the pace thus opening the door for Wilberg who gladly obliged by taking over the lead and racing to the checkered flag. Broughton would finish second followed by Chad Wood, Kevin Knuese, and Riddle.

“I had a real good car on the long runs, we just didn’t get enough of them. I thought with a few laps left there might be a little excitement if those two get together so it worked out for me,” said Wilberg. “That’s the way it works sometimes.”

Zack Riddle set fast time with a 95.062 mph lap with Jimmy Ganski, Brady Liddle, and John Ovadal Jr. winning the heat races.

Scheel Edges Goldade in Area Sportsman

Stephen Scheel took the lead on a late race restart and held off TJ Goldade to win the 20 lap feature for the Ho Chunk Gaming Area Sportsman.

Tommy Wutke and TJ Goldade comprised the front row for the seven car feature with Goldade getting out front right from the start. Goldade and his red Camaro quickly built up a solid lead over the field as Scheel and Bobby Wilberg fought it out for second place.

It was smooth sailing for Goldade until the caution flag came out on lap 17 setting up the double file restart. After a failed attempt at a restart the second time proved to be a charm for Scheel who got the advantage from the outside to take over the lead. From that point on it was all Scheel who held off Goldade with Wilberg, Robert Hansberry Jr., and Mike Taylor rounding out the top five.

“I don’t think I would have had much chance without the late yellow flag. TJ was running real strong on the inside,” said Scheel who picked up his first-ever Area Sportsman feature at MIS.

Fast time was set by Wilberg with a lap of 20.947 while Goldade won the eight lap heat race.

Ace Does It Again in the Bandits

Despite starting twelfth, two-time defending champion Chester Ace picked up his third straight feature win of the 2010 season by topping the sixteen car field in the 20 lap main event for the Roto Rooter Bandits.

Sixteen cars were set to battle it out for supremacy on the “Ring of Fire” with Rob Nuti and Brandon Skolaski bringing the field to the green flag. Skolaski would lead early before the caution flag came out on lap 3 for a spin behind the leader. Following the restart Skolaski would continue to lead with Jovanni DiMaggio and Pat Richgels up to challenge. Meanwhile, Ace and Kyle Padfield were already breaking into the top five before the cars of DiMaggio, Richgels, and Skolaski were three wide going into one forcing Skolaski off the track and bringing out the caution. Skolaski would be unable to continue and the cars of DiMaggio and Richgels were relegated to the back of the pack.

This meant that Ace would inherit the lead followed by Padfield, John Beale, and Jon “Bubba” Coker. The rest of the way would find Padfield trying valiantly to get by Ace either high or low but with no success. Ace was able to make his way around the track on the high side and maneuver past lapped traffic and pick up his third win of the 2010 season. Padfield would finish second followed by Beale, Coker, and Richgels, who came back to finish fifth.

“This was kind of a different way to get in front tonight. I’m fourth or fifth and the next thing I know the leaders get tangled up out front and then I’m the leader. I’m glad that high line has been working so well for me,” said Ace in a post race interview from Indian Motorcylces of Chicago Victory Lane.

Ace set fast time with a lap of 15.504 with Darrell Klug, Coker, and Brian Beale winning the heat races. Kenny Storkson won the 12 lap last chance race which took the top four finishers to the feature.

Fassett Fastest in Hobby Stocks

Don Fassett grabbed the lead early and held off Brad Luck to win the 15 lap feature for the Club LaMark Hobby Stocks.

Mike “The Spike” Storkson had the honors of leading the field of five cars to the green flag, but it would be Fassett and Brad Luck making their way to the front. Fassett would have the advantage from the start but could never get too comfortable with Luck and Terry Ciano Jr. right on his tail.

But the night would belong to Fassett who would hold off his fellow competitors to win for the first time in 2010.

“It’s about time. I’ve had a couple of fast times this season but haven’t been able to get to victory lane. This is great,” said Fassett in his post race interview with Jim Steinke.

Luck turned the fastest lap in qualifying at 21.865 while Chad Knaus won the heat race.

This Time It’s Andy Jones

It was younger brother Andy Jones’ turn to get ahead of his brother Tommy tonight and win the 20 lap feature for the Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends.

Rachael Pinkerman and Tim Narr led the field of a dozen Legends to the green flag with Pinkerman getting out to the early lead. The Barrington Hills, Illinois, driver would lead the first two circuits before the caution flag came out on lap 2 when Dave Terrafino made hard contact with the wall in turn two.

Pinkerman would continue her lead when the race went green again with Max McNamara quickly up to challenge. On lap 6 the two would get together bringing out the caution and sending both drivers to the rear of the field. This meant that Andy Jones and his brother Tommy would take over the top two spots.

From here on out it would be the Jones boys battling it out for the lead with Andy holding on for the win over his brother. McNamara would work his way back to finish third followed by a season high fourth place finish for rookie Josh Kreyer and Tim Narr.

When asked about finishing in front of his brother this week, Jones said, “I had faith that he wasn’t going to hit me. This is my first time in victory lane at Madison so I’m really happy.”

McNamara set fast time with a lap of 14.486 with heat wins going to Pinkerman and McNamara.
