Broughton Wins a Wild One in Late Models at MIS

Taylor, Ambrose, Ace, and Jones Take Home Victories

By John Wells [VL Photos follow race report]

OREGON, WI (05.25.10)-- Scott Broughton survived a crazy and wild race to win the Rockweiler Insulation Late Models feature on opening day at Madison International Speedway, an ASA Member Track. Mike Taylor took top honors in the DeJope Gaming Area Sportsman while Todd Ambrose (Club LaMark Hobby Stocks), Chester Ace (Roto Rooter Bandits) and Tommy Jones (Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends) also captured victories.

Broughton Tops the Field in Late Models

Scott Broughton took the lead on lap 6 and never looked back - which was a good thing for him.

The twenty-four car field was led to the green flag by Tyler Kelley and Steve Rubeck with Kelley showing the most speed early. On lap 4, Broughton, who earlier had set fast time, raced by Rubeck for the second spot with his eyes on Kelley. Kelley would maintain the lead until lap 6 when Broughton got by on the inside coming out of turn four and headed down the frontstretch.

After that things got very interesting - and not in a good way for a number of drivers and their cars.

The red flag came out on lap 15 when Shane Morrissey spun on the front stretch and was collected by Dann Barber. Both cars suffered heavy damage. Unfortunately, this was only the beginning of the carnage.

The side by side restart found Broughton on the inside with Ryan Goldade on the outside. Bobby Wilberg and Rubeck would move by Goldade on lap sixteen with Broughton continuing his lead until the caution came out on lap 17 for an incident in turn one.

On the restart Broughton lined up on the inside with Wilberg on the outside. Once again Broughton was able to maintain his lead until another caution for a spin on lap 19. Another spin on the restart brought similar results out front and the race stayed green for six laps before a spin in turn two brought out the yellow flag.

Broughton continued to hold the lead over Wilberg when the green flag waved again, but it would only take another lap before a front stretch spin sent Zack Riddle into the wall ending his day. The caution flag would come out one lap later when Nathan Oppliger made hard contact with the inside frontstretch wall sending him to the pits.

Broughton would get a good start on the single file restart and the race would stay caution-free for the last thirteen laps. Wilberg finished second followed by defending track champion Jeremy Miller, Rubeck, and Chad Wood.

With track temperatures over one hundred and in car temperatures over one hundred and fifty degrees, an exhausted Broughton climbed out of his car in the Indian Motorcyles of Chicago Victory Lane. “That was a long race. I needed it done about a half an hour ago. Everything worked out, it was fun racing with Bobby (Wilberg) and it’s just great to be back here. Everything ran great and we are really happy with how everything worked out,” said Broughton.

Feiler set fast time with a lap of 19.165 with heat race wins going to Bruce Lee, Jason Hicks, and Shaun Scheel. Brady Liddle won the fifteen lap last chance race.

A Trip to Victory Lane for Mike Taylor

Veteran driver Mike Taylor won the 20 lap feature for the DeJope Gaming Area Sportsman.

The eight car field came to the green flag led by Don Wickstrum and Tommy Wutke. Wickstrum would take the lead and hold it for one lap before Taylor dropped to the inside of Wickstrum coming out of turn four to take the lead.

Taylor would quickly be challenged by the El Camino of Stephen Scheel and on lap 11 it looked like Scheel might have what it takes to get by Taylor. But Taylor would hold him off when Scheel got loose on lap 12 and lost the second spot to Bobby Wilberg. Wilberg and Scheel would fight it out for second before getting together in turn two on lap 13 and bringing out the caution.

Taylor would continue to lead following the restart with Scott Riedner up to second. Taylor would maintain his lead the rest of the way and pick up his first-ever Area Sportsman feature win at MIS. Riedner would finish second followed by Wilberg, TJ Goldade, and Wickstrum.

“This is just great,” said Taylor from victory lane. “I am really happy to get this win today.”

Mike Heelein turned the fastest lap in qualifying at 20.995 with Riedner winning the heat race.

Ace Sets the Pace in the Bandits

Chester Ace sent a message on opening day that he wants a three-peat as he won the 20 lap feature for the Roto Rooter Bandits and picked up a clean sweep on the way.

A sixteen car field, the largest ever at MIS, came to the green led by Brandon Johnson and Brandon Skolaski. Skolaski would get the early lead over Johnson with Brian Beale getting past Johnson on the second lap. Ace, who started tenth, would get by Beale on lap 5 for second.

One lap later Ace would work his way to the inside of Skolaski to take the lead. The race’s first caution flag would come out on lap 8 when Skolaski spun moving Kyle Padfield to third followed by John Beale and Cory Skolaski.

Ace would continue to maintain his advantage over the field before the caution flag waved on lap 11 for a spin followed by another spin on lap 12 that brought out the third caution of the race.

With each restart, Ace continued to build his lead over the field, but he wasn’t to be outdone by Padfield who was up to challenge for the lead before the yellow came out for a car leaking fuel on lap 18.

Ace would be able to hold off Padfield for the final two laps to take the win. Rounding out the top five were Brian Beale, Jovanni DiMaggio, and Cory Skolaski.

“This was fun. The bigger field makes it very interesting, said Ace from victory lane.

Ace set quick time with a lap of 15.349. Dash events for the top twelve qualifiers were won by Cory Skolaski and Ace with qualifying race wins going to DiMaggio and Lee Haag. Pat Richgels won the semi-feature as a total of twenty-seven Bandits were on hand to race on opening day.

Ambrose Tops Hobby Stock Field

One half of last year’s defending champion in the Club LaMark Hobby Stocks was back in victory lane today as Todd Ambrose cruised to victory in the 15 lap feature.

The eight car field was ushered to the green flag by Mike Storkson and Kyle Riedner. Riedner would lead the first lap before Terry Ciano Jr. would get by on the inside for the lead on the second lap. Ciano Jr. would lead for the next two circuits before Ambrose was up to race side by side and make the outside pass for the lead.

With Ambrose building some real estate between himself and Ciano Jr., Don Fassett was closing fast and took over the second spot on lap 5. From here it would be all Ambrose as he held off Fassett for the win. Ciano Jr. would finish third followed by Chad Knaus and Scott Luck.

“This is a lot of fun. I feel very fortunate to be here in victory lane. This is a great way to start the season,” said Ambrose. “Brad Luck and I will be teaming up again trading off the driving duties and going for the championship.”

Fassett set fast time with a lap of 22.073 with Ambrose winning the heat race.

Tommy Jones Gets His First MIS Win

Tommy Jones of Gurnee, Illinois, picked up his first-ever win at MIS by taking top honors in the 20 lap feature for the Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends.

A pair of veterans, Rich Miller and Tim Narr comprised the front row in the ten car field, but shortly after the race went green Tommy Jones, Max McNamara, and Andy Jones vaulted by to take the top three spots. They were joined a couple of laps later by Aaron Moyer to form a four car pack.

By lap 6 the four were caught up to lapped traffic and were able to safely make their way back out front. Tommy Jones continued to be the man on the point until the caution flag waved on lap 14 for a spin in turn four.

With two-time defending champion McNamara and Jones’ brother Andy in hot pursuit, Tommy Jones would be able to keep them at bay the rest of the way despite a last lap effort by his brother Andy who took over the second spot from McNamara on lap 18. Following the Jones boys were McNamara, Moyer, and Narr.

“We came here today and qualified, ran the heat race, and here we are now,” said Jones, who had some tough luck at another track he was racing on Saturday. When asked about holding off his brother he added, “He’s come a long ways in the two years he’s raced.”

Fast time was set by Andy Jones with a lap of 14.311 with heat race victories going to Tommy Jones and Moyer.
