Wilberg and Wood Victorious at MIS By John Wells Oregon, WI (Sunday, May 2, 2010)- Two drivers with deep roots at Madison International Speedway picked up checkered flags on opening day as Bobby Wilberg of Beloit, Wisconsin, took top honors in the ASA Midwest Sportsman feature and Jerry Wood of Sun Praire, Wisconsin, won the ASA Truck feature. It was an historic day at MIS as both of these divisions were racing for the first time as part of the ASA.
Wilberg Tops Sportsman Field Bobby Wilberg proved that he is going to be one of the drivers to watch weekly at MIS in 2010 as he took his Dodge Challenger to victory lane in the 35 lap ASA Midwest Sportsman feature. Scott Lawver and Tommy Wutke led the field of thirteen cars to the green flag with Lawver jumping out to the early lead in his Joe Shear tribute car that donned the number thirty-six for this event. Lawver would lead the first five laps before Minnesota driver Jerry Thomsen took over the top spot. Starting ninth, Wilberg was already up to third by lap 6 and one lap later got past Lawver for second with Kalbus on his rear bumper. On lap 9 Scott Riedner pulled into fourth place and was ready to join the mix for the lead. Thomsen would continue his lead until being overtaken on lap 10 by both Wilberg and Kalbus. Thomsen and Riedner would then battle it out for third before being joined by Chris Marek on lap 20 who would move into fourth ahead of Riedner. Meanwhile Wilberg and Kalbus would pace the field with Wilberg maintaining his advantage over the two time MIS Area Sportsman champion. On lap 26 Marek would move into third place but well behind the leaders. Riedner would get the best of Marek on lap 28 and permanently take over the third spot. But out front it would be all Wilberg as he held off Kalbus to take the first-ever checkered flag in the the ASA Midwest Sportsman division. Riedner would finish third followed by Marek and Thomsen. We had some trouble with the car at practice on Saturday. I got a call this morning that the car was ready while I was coaching a baseball game. We hurried up here and here we are, said Wilberg. Kalbus set fast time with a lap of 21.015. Heat wins went to Marek and Kalbus.

Butch Mierendorf and Bobby Yonkee brought the field of fourteen ASA Trucks to the green flag in their inaugural event. Mierendorf would lead one circuit before Conrad Jorgenson would take over the top spot on lap 2. Wood had already moved up four positions from his ninth starting position on lap 2 and would move into third on lap 5. Wood would power by Yonkee on lap 7 for second place with Bret Widdis right behind. Jorgenson would continue to show the way with Widdis and Wood fighting it out for the second spot. On lap 14 Wood would regain second with fast qualifier Tom McClintock up to third on lap 17 followed by Widdis and John Wood. John Wood would pass Widdis on lap 19 for fourth. The top five would remain the same until lap 33 when Wood would take over the top spot from Jorgenson and lead the final seven laps to pick up the win. Jorgenson would finish second followed by McClintock, John Wood, and Widdis. Rounding out the top ten would be Camden Murphy, Yonkee, Bill Collins, Gary McDonald, and Tom McCardle.
