OREGON, WISCONSIN (Tuesday, May 04, 2010)-- After being rained out at Dells Raceway Park last weekend, the ASA Midwest Sportsman Tour kicked off their inaugural event at Madison International Speedway on Sunday for the 2nd Annual “Joe Shear Classic” presented by ECHO Chain Saws. Thirteen of some of the most talented sportsman drivers around the Midwest entered the event. After a full invert, fast qualifier Jay Kalbus started in thirteenth position. The #62 of Tom Wutke and #36 of Scott Lawver led the field to the green flag.

In his, Joe Shear inspired red, white, and blue #36; Lawver took the early lead over the #4 of Mike Taylor. Pole sitter Tom Wutke had a flat right rear tire and spun on the front stretch in the early laps. Unfortunately, Lawver was unable hold onto his lead and the #22 of Jerry Thomsen slipped into the top spot.

While the battle was taking place at the front of the field, two-time MIS ASA Late Model champion and seven-time Rockford Speedway champion, Bobby Wilberg was making a hard charge to the front after starting in 10th. Wilberg blew his motor in practice on Saturday and did not intend to come back on Sunday. “I got killed in baseball today, so I said, I'm going to go race,” stated Wilberg. His crew got him a motor; they loaded up and got to the track just in time to qualify.

The driver of the #28 was able to hold off fast qualifier, Jay Kalbus to become the first ever ASA Midwest Sportsman Tour winner. Jay Kalbus fell one position short of sweeping the day's events for the Sportsman Tour. “Bobby was fast, I just didn't have anything for him. I was just looking at his rear bumper all day,” added Kalbus.

Scott “Chico” Reidner came home with a third place podium finish, and just did not have enough to challenge for the top position. “I was hoping I had something for them. I am a little rusty out here on the _-mile. I gave everything I got. I am proud of third,” Reidner stated.

This is just the first of what will be a growing series with great potential for sportsman drivers all over the Midwest. The ASA Midwest Sportsman Tour will join the American Speed Association® Kwik Trip Midwest Tour presented by ECHO Outdoor Power Equipment and grandstay.net again on Friday June 11th at Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids, IA for the 38th Annual Keith Fleck/Miller 100.
