Rebecca Kasten Conquers Limited Late Models at MIS Haseleu, Schmidt, Ace, and McNamara Also Winners Friday, August 15, 2008 (Oregon, WI) On a beautiful night for racing and in front of a very energetic crowd, Rebecca Kasten held off a talented field of drivers to win her first-ever feature in the Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models on Swiss Colony Night at Madison International Speedway. Nathan Haseleu (Weaver Auto Parts Super Late Models), Bret Schmidt (Bryden Motors Area Sportsman), Chester Ace (Roto Rooter Bandits), and Max McNamara (Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends) were also feature winners. A big thank you to Swiss Colony for adding $500 to both the super late and limited late model purse.
Kasten Wins First Feature at MIS Rebecca Kasten became the seventh different winner in the Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models in 2008 by winning the Swiss Colony 40. Twenty cars took the green flag led by Paul Edmundson and Tyler Kelley. Wanting to set the early pace, Kasten quickly moved by both front row drivers to take the early lead after the first lap. Kevin Knuese and Brady Liddle would move into second and third respectively on lap 2 with Liddle passing Knuese on the next lap. The first caution of the race came out on lap 8 for a spin and took away Kasten's several car length advantage over the field. Kasten would continue her lead after the restart but would be unable to hold off Liddle who dropped to the inside of Kasten going into turn three on lap10 and take the lead. Liddle wasted little time building up a multi-car lead over Kasten with Jason Hicks up to third followed by Knuese and Nathan Oppliger. Looking like the dominant car, Liddle would continue to pace the field until things got interesting on lap 33. As Kasten was chasing down Liddle, she made contact with backstretch wall but was able to keep control of her car. Just as this was happening, Liddle was up into the wall coming out of turn three bringing out the caution flag and moving Kasten back into the top spot. A multi-car spin on the front stretch following the restart would end the night for John Baumeister Jr. and would slightly rearrange the top five. Following Kasten now would be Hicks, Oppliger, Chad Stevens, and Andrew Kulka. When the green flag waved again, Kasten would maintain her advantage with Stevens now the man on the move as he passed Oppliger for third on lap 34 and took over the second spot on lap 39. But forty laps would not be enough for Stevens as Kasten would hold him off by 0.358 seconds to pick up her first-ever feature win at MIS. Following Kasten and Stevens would be Hicks, Ross Kenseth, and Oppliger. Point leader Bobby Wilberg finished in sixth place. As she climbed out of the car in victory lane, the eighteen year old who will begin school at Marquette University next week was greeted with applause and cheers from the appreciative crowd. We've made some dramatic improvements to get where we are tonight. It's amazing to be here in victory lane, said Kasten. Liddle was tough and he was pulling away from me a few times, but we'll take it anyway we can get it. Wilberg set fast time with a lap of 18.853 while Mark Miller won the qualifying race and Liddle captured the coveted Wayne's Custom DIECAST Dash. After post-race inspection of the top ten finishers both Rebecca Kasten and Nathan Oppliger were fined and each lost fifty points for illegal equipment. Fines were $125 for both drivers with Kasten also forfeiting the $250 bonus money that had been added to the purse. Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models 40 Laps Feature:1. Three Weeks in a Row for Haseleu Nathan Haseleu made it three weeks in a row after winning the Swiss Colony 40 for the Weaver Auto Parts Super Late Models. Thirteen cars answered the call with Kyle Kinder and Frank Kreyer comprising the front row. Kreyer would show the most speed early followed by Kinder and Gary LaMonte. On lap 3 LaMonte would pass Kinder for second with Steve Rubeck and Bobby Wilberg right behind him. Rubeck would slide past LaMonte for second on lap 7 with Wilberg up to third one lap later. On lap 10 Wilberg would get past Rubeck for second and set his sights on Kreyer. By lap 18 Wilberg was ready to challenge for the lead when he pulled inside Kreyer. The two raced side by side before Wilberg gained the advantage coming out of turn four on lap 19. Two laps later, Haseleu, who started tenth, cracked the top five and on lap 23 was up to fourth. Two laps later Rubeck would overtake Kreyer for second and on lap 26 Haseleu would pass Kreyer for third. With Rubeck closing the gap on Wilberg disaster struck as smoke came out of Rubeck's car bringing out the caution and ending the night for him and moving Haseleu up to second. After the restart Wilberg continued to lead with Haseleu right on his bumper. On lap 28 Haseleu dropped to the inside of Wilberg to go for the lead. One lap later Haseleu would clear Wilberg coming out of turn four to take the lead. From this point it was all Haseleu who held off Wilberg by 1.271 seconds to make his way to Smart Motors Victory Lane. Wilberg would finish second followed by Andrew Morrissey, Kreyer, and LaMonte. It was a big win for Haseleu considering one of his sponsors, Swiss Colony, was sponsoring the night. The car has been great lately. We're getting great traction coming out of the corners. I'm real happy to win on this night. Joe Hunter from Swiss Colony puts a great effort into this and all of my guys are super, said Haseleu in a post race interview with track announcer Eric Huenefeld. Haseleu set fast time with a lap of 17.685. Weaver Auto Parts Super Late Models 40 Laps Feature:1. Nathan Haseleu (Pardeeville, WI), 2. Bobby Wilberg (Beloit, WI), 3. Schmidt Wins by Inches In the closest race of the night and probably the closest race of the season at MIS, Bret Schmidt edged Scott Lawver by inches to win the 15 lap feature for the Bryden Motors Area Sportsman. Seven cars took the green flag paced by Lawver and TJ Goldade. Lawver would take the lead from the start with Steve Dickson quickly up to second. Wasting no time, Schmidt and Jay Kalbus were up to third and fourth and both would pass Dickson on lap 5. With Lawver still showing the way out front, Schmidt was closing the gap and by lap 8 Lawver's lead was down to one car length. On lap 13 Schmidt would maneuver his way to the outside of Lawver and the two would battle it out side by side. With Lawver on the inside and Schmidt on the outside, Kalbus and Mike Heelein were not to be outdone as they made it a four car battle. Going into the final lap it was still too close to call and all of the ingredients were in place for an exciting finish. Coming out of turn four on the final lap Schmidt and Lawver were still side by side. As they came to the checkererd flag Schmidt gained a slight advantage as Lawver made a last ditch effort to edge Schmidt at the line but would come up just short. Kalbus would hold off Heelein for third with Dickson rounding out the top five. Lawver's a great racer and a clean racer and I had to work my butt off for that one. The high line worked because he wasn't giving me anything else, said Schmidt from victory lane. The win was his third in four attempts at MIS in 2008. Kalbus set fast time with a lap of 20.547 and Lawver won the heat race. Bryden Motors Area Sportsman 15 Laps Feature:1. Bret Schmidt (Watertown, WI), 2. Scott Lawver (Roscoe, IL), 3. Five in a Row for Ace For the fifth time in a row Chester Ace found his way to victory lane by winning the 20 lap feature for the Roto Rooter Bandits and picked up a Clean Sweep for the night. Randy Padfield and Brandon Skolaski led the eight car field to the green flag with the two racing side by side for the first two laps before Skolaski gained the advantage. The caution flag came out on lap 5 when Cory Skolaski spun on the backstretch and was collected by Stephen Scheel. Scheel would head to the pits and return later. Brandon Skolaski continued to lead after the restart before Ace moved alongside him on lap 7 and would motor by him on the outside coming out of turn four shortly before the caution flag came out for the second time for a spin. Ace would build a slight advantage over Skolaski on the restart with Kyle Padfield up to third. On lap 11 Skolaski would spin which allowed Padfield to move up to second. Padfield would now have nine laps to hunt down Ace and he would do everything he could to do it. Kyle raced me hard and I thought a couple of times he was going to catch me, said Ace. Several times Padfield would try to get to the inside of Ace going into turn one but would come up just short and once again have to settle for second place. This has been a great run. Things are going well and we want to win the championship, added Ace. Following Ace and Padfield at the line were Jody Schmidt, Pat Richgels, and Brandon Skolaski. Ace won the heat race and set fast time with a lap of 15.514 to pick up the Clean Sweep. Roto Rooter Bandits 20 Laps Feature:1. Chester Ace (Oregon, WI), 2. Kyle Padfield (Stoughton, WI), 3. McNamara Does It Again Max McNamara cruised to victory in the 20 lap feature for the Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends and took home the checkered flag for the fourth week in a row. Ten Legends took the green flag led by Michael Cooter and Tom Palma, but unfortunately it would take three starts before the first lap would be completed. Eventually Cooter would take the lead with McNamara and Herman Greinig closely in tow. Cooter would lead the first five circuits until he could no longer hold off the hard charging McNamara who powered by on the outside coming out of turn four on lap 6. The caution flag came out on lap 9 when the cars of Rachael Pinkerman and Tom Palma got together in turn three ending the night for both drivers. From that point on it was all McNamara who easily outdistanced himself from the field to pick up his fourth straight win and take a commanding lead in the point standings. Cooter would earn his highest finish of the season by crossing the line in second place followed by Aaron Moyer, Greinig, and Adam Rawski. Me and Cooter had a good battle going on tonight. I'm just glad I avoided the wreck in turn three, said McNamara in a post race interview. It was also announced that a national qualifier for the INEX Legends will be coming to MIS on September 20 featuring drivers from all over the country at which McNamara added, I'll be there. McNamara set fast time with a lap of 13.989 on the quarter mile and also won his heat race to earn the Clean Sweep. Cooter was victorious in the other heat race.
