Haseleu Edges Rubeck in Construction Labor Management 50
Six Other Drivers Also Win Features

Friday, July 11, 2008 (Oregon, WI)

Fans were treated to one of the closest finishes ever at Madison International Speedway when Nathan Haseleu edged Steve Rubeck at the line to win the Construction Labor Management 50 for the Weaver Auto Parts Super Late Models. Six other divisions were also in action with Bret Schmidt, Chester Ace, Max McNamara, Randy Nottestad, Rodney Mundt, and Caylie Duncanson claiming victories.

Haseleu Beats Rubeck to the Line to Win Super Late Model Feature

Just when the fans thought they had seen some exciting racing in the Weaver Auto Parts Super Late Models this season, Nathan Haseleu and Steve Rubeck put on a classic battle that resulted in Haseleu winning at the stripe by .0124 seconds after passing Rubeck on the outside coming out of turn four on the final lap. “That was a great race,” said Haseleu. “I waited for the opportunity to get by Steve and was able to get around on the outside.”

Tim Hintz and Shane Morrissey paced the eighteen car field to the green flag with Morrissey grabbing the early lead. Frank Kreyer would quickly move to second from his fifth place starting postion and apply the pressure to Morrissey. But it would be Shane's cousin Andrew who would eventually take the lead following an inside pass on the front stretch on lap 14. By lap 20 Kreyer would still hold down the second position followed by Dave Feiler, Rubeck, and Bobby Wilberg.

The caution flag would come out on both lap 23 and 24 for spins. On the restart following the second caution disaster struck for Andrew Morrissey as his car was unable to come up to speed thus opening the door for Kreyer who would claim the lead. Meanwhile, Haseleu would join the top five after starting twelfth in th field.

On lap 29 Rubeck would slide by Feiler for the second spot just before the caution flag came out for an incident in turn four.

On the restart Kreyer would continue to lead with a spirited battle taking place behind him between Feiler and Wilberg. On lap 33 things really heated up as the two battled down the backstretch and eventually getting together with Wilberg sliding off the track into the infield. For Wilberg it meant the end of the night due to damage to his car and for Feiler it meant a trip to the rear for his involvement.

Kreyer would continue to lead following the restart with Rubeck quickly closing ground with Haseleu also up to join the mix. On lap 36 Rubeck pulled alongside Kreyer who wouldn't be able to hold him off as Rubeck took the lead on lap 37.

On lap 40 Haseleu would overtake Kreyer for second and would now focus his attention on Rubeck. All of the ingredients were in place for a classic Weaver Auto Parts Super Late Model finish.

Going into turn one on lap 45 Haseleu gave Rubeck a tap, but the Illinois driver would hang on and maintain his slight lead. Haseleu looked low and high but was unable to find the opening he needed to get by RubeckÉuntil the final lap.

On lap 50 Haseleu had set himself up for an outside pass going into turn three and would eventually clear Rubeck coming out of turn four and edge him at the finish line by .0124 seconds. Following Haseleu and Rubeck at the line would be Kreyer, Zack Riddle, and Nick Hammer.

Haseleu set fast time with a lap of 17.644.

A fifteen lap exhibition race was held for the visiting ASA Late Model Northern Series drivers with Jesse Saunders taking the checkered flag.

McNamara Edges Arelano to Win Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends Feature

Michael Cooter and Hermann Greinig comprised the front row of the nine car field but neither was able to hold the lead after the first lap. Showing a strong burst of speed, Tom Palma, who was making his first-ever appearance at MIS, took the lead. By lap 7 McNamara was up to third and ready to challenge Dave Townsend for second place when the caution flag came out for Townsend was his car suffered heavy damage in a turn one incident.

On the restart it was Palma who would continue to lead but for only one more lap as McNamara got by on the inside with Arelano quickly up to surpass Palma for second.

This set up the two car battle between McNamara and Arelano that we have seen all season long. McNamara would need to use every ounce of energy to hold of Arelano but this was his night as he picked up his second feature win of the 2008 season. The American Short Trackers and International Four Cylinders made their debut on Wisconsin's Fastest Half-Mile with eleven cars taking the challenge. All cars raced together but were scored separately as three “short trackers” joined the eight International cars. When all was said and done it would be Randy Nottestad and Rodney Mundt taking home top accolades in the 15 lap feature.

Mark English and Peter Shelley paced the field to the green flag with Shelley taking the early lead after English failed to get up to speed. Shelley would lead the first three circuits before Derek Bettenhausen would take the lead on lap 4.

Bettenhausen would lead until lap 6 when Nottestad and his “Flying Pinto” would vault into first place. A great battle was taking place between Bettenhausen and Mundt for second place with Steve Allman up to add to the mix. Allman would eventually win the battle for second but would not have enough to catch Nottestad who raced his way to victory lane.
