Todd Welsing Wins MIS Enduro

Oregon, WI (Friday, July 4, 2008)

Todd Welsing of Denmark, Wisconsin, made the most of his first-ever visit to Madison International Speedway by winning the 300 lap four cylinder enduro as part of the Night of Thrills.

A field of thirty-six cars started the race with Kyle Stark showing an early burst of speed and jumping out to the lead. Stark would hold the top spot for the first sixteen circuits before giving up the lead to Kraig Koehler. Koehler would lead until Stark regained the point on lap 30.

Stark appeared to be the dominant car until losing a wheel on lap 50 which allowed Koehler to get back in front followed by Tom Bleecker. On lap 55 Welsing would get by Bleecker for second, but Koehler still had a sizeable lead. Koehler would continue his lead all the way to the first mandatory caution at lap 100.

As the cars headed to the pits it would be Welsing lining back up ahead of Koehler and on the restart he would become the new leader. Not to be outdone, Koehler and his Ford Escort would take back the point on lap 107. Welsing would remain in the hunt as he never let Koehler out of his sight and would regain the lead on lap 154.

Koehler would continue to chase down Welsing until he got off the pace on lap 184 which allowed Todd Hebel to move into second place. The second mandatory caution of the race at lap 200 found Welsing still in the lead with Hebel in second followed by Josh Bauer, Elliot Marquardt, and Koehler.

Opting to stay on the track and not pit, Welsing lined up in the number one spot for the restart and once the green flag waved would never look back. The first of two red flags came out on lap 214 for a fire in a car that was trying to exit the track and go to the pits. After the restart Welsing would continue to lead with Hebel still in second place but on the lead lap.

On lap 237 Welsing passed Hebel to put him one lap down and by lap 250 Hebel would need to pull into the pit area for maintenance. This moved Bauer up to second place but with a lot of ground to make up if he wanted to catch Welsing.

The second red flag of the race came out on lap 262 when Randy Padfield's car started on fire as he came out of turn three. Padfield immediately took his car off the track and the safety crew responded to extinguish the flames.

From that point on Welsing would continue to lead with Bauer trying to catch him but with no luck as Welsing cruised to victory. Following Welsing and Bauer in the top five were Marquardt, Koehler, and Michael Landeck. Rounding out the top ten were Matt Cherney, Brad Harnack, Shaun Scheel, Dale Chitek, and Hebel.

“This was a big win. The car was great and we had a lot of fun. I want to thank everyone who helped make this possible, “ said a jubilant Welsing from victory lane just prior to his interview for Speed Channel's Lucas Oil “On the Edge” series who were at MIS to tape the races.

Train Race tp Rosenberg and Hall

Five trains entered the Train Race with Jim Rosenberg and co-pilot Ryan Hall winning the event. The Train Race involves teams of three vehicles chained together with a driver in the first and third vehicles. The very patriotic train of Gary Oscarson got the crowd on their feet when he made heavy contact with the outside wall in turn two of the quarter mile and went through several barriers.

Oscarson also put on quite a show in the Gauntlet Race as he drove the little red school bus around the track battling against five other vehicles who were trying to prevent him from doing so. Oscarson thrilled the crowd by driving in reverse at one point. Unfortunately the race came to an early end when Oscarson was forced over one of the tractor tire barriers and it was the end of the night for the bus when the fuel tank was punctured.

Racing continues at Madison International Speedway on Friday, July 11th with action in the Weaver Auto Parts Super Late Models, Bryden Motors Area Sportsman, Roto Rooter Bandits, Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends, and the International Four Cylinders and American Short Trackers. Pit gates open at 3:30 with hot laps at 4:45, qualifying at 6:20 and racing at 7:30.
