Tribute to America Night Brings Out the Best at MIS

Wilberg Wins Track Championship

Friday, September 5, 2008 (Oregon, WI)

Bobby Wilberg successfully defended his track championship in the Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models on Tribute to America Night at Madison International Speedway that featured eight division in action. Thanks to a pair of fifth place finishes in both features, Wilberg was able to hold off rookie sensation Ross Kenseth to win yet another track title at MIS.

Kenseth and John Baumeister Jr. each won a feature in the Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Model division with Don Fassett (Hobby Stocks), Rodney Mundt (International Four Cylinders), Zach Rodriguez (AST Four Cylinders), Jay Kalbus (Area Sportsman), Alex Arelano (Legends), Caylie Duncason (Bandoleros), and Pat Heaney (Midwest Stock Car Classics) also winning features.

Due to the threat of rain in the area, MIS track officials decided eliminate the heat races and only run features. With Mother Nature's cooperation the entire event including the spectacular fireworks program was completed much to the delight of the fans.

There's No Denying Kenseth in First Supply 40

Ross Kenseth had to control his own destiny in his quest for a track championship, and that's exactly what he did by winning the First Supply 40 and besting a huge field of thirty-one cars in a caution free event.

Nathan Oppliger and Andrew Kulka had the honor of pacing the field to the green flag with Oppliger out to the early lead. By lap 2 Kyle Jarlsberg would overtake Kulka for second with Scott McGettigan and Jason Hicks getting by Kulka two laps later.

With Oppliger running out front, Kenseth would move to the sixth position on lap 8. Out front it was clear that Jarlsberg was closing the gap and on lap fourteen was right on his rear bumper. Two laps later on lap 16 Jarlsberg would become the new leader as he passed Oppliger coming out of turn two. On this same lap Kenseth also joined the top five and was quickly working his way to the front.

By lap 23, Kenseth was up to second and ready to challenge Jarlsberg as the two had put some real estate between themselves and the fieldÉat least the field behind them. Lapped traffic was now a real issue as the two worked their way adeptly through the tail end cars. Keeping a close eye on this entire situation was Bobby Wilberg who quietly had moved into the top five.

On lap 30 it appeared that Kenseth was going to have to make his move on the outside and while coming out of turn two that's exactly what he did as he cleared Jarlsberg to take the lead. From there Kenseth worked inside and outside of lapped traffic including a potentially disastrous situation on lap 34 when a car spun just ahead of him.

But there would no stopping Kenseth who picked up his second feature win of the season and put himself forty-four points behind Wilberg going into the second feature. Jarlsberg would finish second followed by Oppliger, Hicks, and Wilberg.

Wilberg set fast time with a lap of 18.654.

“It was a lot of fun. There were a lot of lapped cars in the way and I wasn't always sure what they were going to do,” said Kenseth from Smart Motors Victory Lane.

Johnny B is Good in Wayne's Custom DIECAST 40

The roller coaster ride continued for John Baumeister Jr. and things are definitely looking up as the Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, driver won for the second time in as many weeks.

All of the drama was in place for the second feature for the Limited Late Models with Kenseth still having a shot at the track championship. Ryan Goldade and Baumeister Jr. brought the field of thirty-one to the green flag with Baumeister taking a very slight lead after the first lap. Goldade would take the lead away from Baumeister Jr. one lap later and show the way.

On lap 6 Wilberg joined the top five with Kevin Knuese in third and Kyle Shear in fourth place. Meanwhile, Kenseth had moved up to seventh on lap 16 and was working on figuring out a way to get ahead of Wilberg.

The first caution came out on lap 20 for debris which brought the field back in line for a single file restart. Goldade would continue to lead until Baumeister Jr. proved to be just too fast as he surpassed him for the top spot on lap 23 while Wilberg was moving up to fourth and Kenseth one spot behind.

On lap 32, Kenseth was able to get by Wilberg and the two swapped positions just before the caution flag came out for possible fluid on the track.

After the restart it was still all Baumeister Jr. who raced to the checkered flag followed by Goldade, Kenseth, Knuese, and Wilberg. Unfortunately for Kenseth he was only able to pick up ten points on Wilberg and his challenge for the championship would come up just short.

In a post race interview Baumeister responded to the question of how it feels to win two in a row by saying, “I'll take it any day. They say after the first one the rest come easy.”

In a post race celebration on the track, defending track champion Bobby Wilberg said, “It's been a great season for us. We haven't had to deal with a whole lot of problems and we've tried to just finish in the top five every week. We pretty much were able to do that. The competition is very good in this division and some nights you know you don't have to win you just need to finish up in the top five or six. These guys race hard and on a hard tire and this is just a great division.” Wilberg also has track championships at Madison in the Super Late Models, Madison Late Models, and Midwest Modifieds to go along with his two championships in the Limited Late Models.

Division runner-up and Rookie of the Year Kenseth added, “It's been a great year. I've got to congratulate Bobby Wilberg who had a great year and never really slipped up. He got a lot of points on us in qualifying during the season. I had a lot of fun on the half-mile and I'll be back for the Fall Classic.” Kenseth also received a trophy for best overall finish between the two features.

Finishing in third place in his second year in the Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models was Ryan Goldade. “The season started out really good for us and we had some good weeks and we were able to bounce back. We really need the second place finish tonight. We're definitely going to give the track championship a shot next year.”

Fassett Fastest in Hobby Stocks

Don Fassett was just too fast for the field of sixteen Hobby Stocks as he cruised to victory in their fifteen lap feature.

A great field of sixteen hobby stocks made their way to MIS with Dan Wood and Joey Thomas having the honor of bringing the field to the green flag. Thomas would lead the first two circuits before the speedy Fassett would sneak down to the inside of him coming out of turn four to take the lead.

From that point on the best race appeared to be for second place as Fassett quickly built up room between himself and the field. Ben Koberstein would move up to second place and seemed to be up for the challenge to catch Fassett. Meanwhile, Bobby Selsing Jr. was working his way through the field and was up to fifth on lap 4 and by lap 9 was shown in the third position. On lap 14 Selsing Jr. was able to find a way around Koberstein and take over second place. But on this night no driver would have enough for Fassett who picked up the win on his first time ever on Wisconsin's Fastest Half-Mile. Following Fassett, Selsing Jr., and Koberstein would be Bart DiMattina Jr. and Greg Pruitt.

Pruitt was fastest in qualifying with a lap of 22.621.

Mundt Does it Again in International Four Cylinders

Rodney Mundt won for the second time in as many races in the International Four Cylinders by taking top honors in the fifteen lap feature that was raced on the half-mile.

What is believed to be the first-ever father-daughter team to make up the front row of a race at MIS saw Dale Smith out battle his daughter Ashley Smith and take the early lead. The veteran Smith looked very strong as he held off the competition including on two restarts following cautions.

The field was very even as four or five cars battled for the lead with Stephen Scheel applying the most pressure starting on lap 6. By lap 9 Mundt was up to battle Scheel for second place and eventually make the pass to take over the number two spot.

Applying heavy pressure on Smith, Mundt dropped to the very low side of the track coming out of one and miraculously made it by Smith coming out of the gravel and the grass. From that point Mundt saw nothing but space between himself and the checkered flag as he motored his way to victory. Unfortunately for Smith his solid race would end after spinning on the final lap. Scheel would finish second followed by Ken Au, Gary Stark, and Casey Strese.

Mundt set fast time with a lap of 22.981.

15 Lap Feature:1. Rodney Mundt (Lake Mills, WI), 2. Stephen Scheel (Lake Mills, WI), 3. Ken Au (Jefferson, WI), 4. Gary Stark (Madison, WI), 5. Casey Strese (Watertown, WI), 6. Kyle Smith (Lake Mills, WI), 7. Dale Smith (Lake Mills, WI), 8. Joe Cross (Sun Prairie, WI), 9. Jim Pankow (Jefferson, WI), 10. Ken Hoff Jr. (Stoughton, WI), 11. Brandon Skolaski (Fitchburg, WI), 12. Ashley Smith (Lake Mills, WI), 13. Cory Skolaski (Fitchburg, WI),

Rodriguez Rules in AST Four Cylinders

Zach Rodriguez will always remember his first trip around Wisconsin's Fastest Half-Mile as he won the fifteen lap feature for the AST Four Cylinders.

Tim Melvin and Derek Bettenhausen paced the field of nine AST Four Cylinders to the green flag. But unfortunately the green would not stay out long as a spin in turn two on the first lap changed the green to yellow. All cars involved would eventually continue the race.

When the race went green again Bettenhausen and Rodriguez would now make up the front row with Z-Rod getting out to the early advantage. By lap 3 Aaron Rude appeared to be the fastest car on the track and was up to seriously challenge Rodriguez. On lap 7 it looked like Rude was ready to make his move until his car got a little loose coming out of turn four.

But Rude was not done in his pursuit of Rodriguez as he made a late race challenge for the lead but came up just short and had to settle for second place. Bettenhausen would hold on for third followed by George Sparkman and Tim Steger.

Rude was fastest in qualifying with a lap of 22.276.

Jeff Turnure (Rockford, IL), 7. Rachel Sparkman (Loves Park, IL), 8. Tim Melvin (Machesney Park, IL), 9. Steve Allman (Oconomowoc, WI), DNS- Randy Notttestad (Deerfield, WI)

The Rock Star Rocks Again

Jay Kalbus continued his winning ways by taking the checkered flag in the fifteen lap feature for the Bryden Motors Area Sportsman.

TJ Goldade would take the early lead from his front row starting position but it didn't take Kalbus long to catch him. On lap 3 Kalbus pulled alongside Goldade to challenge for the top spot and would make the pass one lap later. Goldade would now need to fight off Mike Heelein for second place as the two fought it out for several laps before Goldade would spin on lap 13. But out front it was all Kalbus who would once again return to victory lane followed by Heelein, Steve Dickson, Goldade, and RC Van Ransull.

Heelein set fast time.

Arelano Returns to Victory Lane

After a three week absence Alex Arelano returned to MIS and picked up the feature win in the Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends fifteen lap event.

Teammates Tim Narr and Rich Miller brought the eight car field to the green flag with Narr wasting no time jumping out to the early lead. Up to chase Narr for the lead was Michael Cooter who by lap 8 had closed the gap between himself and the leader. Unfortunately for Cooter, his night would end early when he made heavy contact with the inside wall coming out of turn four.

On the restart Arelano would drop to the inside of Narr and power by him for the lead with Tom Palma and Aaron Moyer up to fight it out for second place. But in the end it would be all Arelano who powered his way to victory lane followed by Palma, Moyer, Adam Rawski, and Narr. Shortly after crossing the finish line Palma would make contact with the inside wall heavily damaging his car.

Three in a Row for Caylie Duncanson

For the third straight time this season twelve year old Caylie Duncanson took home top honors in the Bandolero division by easily winning their fifteen lap feature.

Starting on the front row alongside Kyle Vergata, Duncanson wasted no time getting out to the early lead amongst the seven competitors.

A lap five incident that saw Dwight Dunalp make contact with the turn two wall and barrel roll down the backstretch brought out the red flag. With body panels flying in the air, Dunlap's car finally came to rest with the safety crew and Oregon EMS and Fire quickly on the scene. Dunlap was transported to a local hospital for precautionary measures.

When the race continued it would be all Duncanson who would easily pick up the win followed by eleven year old Morgan Melichar who was making her first appearance at MIS. Rounding out the top five were Nick Carnes, John Kringas, and Ben Carnes.

Heaney Handles Half-Mile in Classics

Pat Heaney won the eighteen lap event for the Midwest Stock Car Classics.

TJ McKenna in his 1970 Plymouth took the early lead and appeared to be the class of the field in his Richard Petty replica. Randy Vassh in his 1970 Dodge held down the second spot before being passed on lap 4 by the 1957 Ford of John Vassh Jr. McKenna would continue to lead until lap 9 until the 1967 Pontiac GTO of Pat Heaney raced by him for the lead.

Heaney would continue to lead the rest of the way with a good battle behind him between Randy and John Vassh. In the end the 1970 Dodge would hold off the 1957 Ford for second place. Rounding out the top five were Lon Meagher and Sam DuVall.

Heaney set quick time with a lap of 23.253.
